This lotus is a cyanotype mixed-media work on 250 gsm acid-free watercolour paper. In the image of the lotus from overhead, I've chosen to use fine lines to suggest the delicateness of the flower petals. The center of the flower, however, the pedical crowned with the ovary, is fleshy and sexual. I chose to seal the center with a gloss medium and pigment shaved from coloured pencils to suggest the rich warm yellow and dewy heart.
The lotus is an important flower where I come from. It grows wild in ponds, both in the cities and beyond them. It springs out of the garbage in city ponds. It creates an ecosystem for other aquatic creatures. It has medicinal parts and helps removes pollutants from water.
The Prussian blue of the cyanotype process is like the overcast water, usually choked with the plate-like leaves. This colour is the result of sunlight on a light-sensitive substance coated on watercolour paper. The image was made using a drawing on a transparent sheet of paper as a photographic negative.
The blue of cyanotypes last a very long time, as long as the artwork is not placed in direct sunlight.
I will pack the work with hard backing for protection, and wrapped in acid-free tissue paper so it reaches you safely. I hope you enjoy the work as much as I enjoyed making it.
