This mixed media work is in A4, on 250 gsm watercolour paper. It is one in a series inspired by my visit to the botanical Kew Gardens in Richmond, near London. It is an image of the wildflowers that most of us don't notice underfoot, in a conservation area where exotic plants are cared for in climate-controlled greenhouses.
The work was made by coating a sheet of paper with a light-sensitive iron solution and using a drawing on transparent paper as a photographic negative. After exposing to the sun, I washed the cyanotype first in a vinegar bath, then in a water bath. After drying, I toned the work in a tea solution, which neutralized the dense Prussian blue of the original work into a more earthy and airy navy. I then hand-coloured some areas with artist-grade watercolour. I then mounted the A5 sized work on a green A4 mountboard with archival tape.
I hope you enjoy the work as much as I did making it. I will ship it wrapped in protective tissue paper and in a hard-backed envelope for safety.
